On behalf of the SGB Youth Literacy Council, I’d like to thank everyone who participated and supported our Great Grey-Bruce Grown-up Spelling Bee! Thanks to all of you, and your patience and generosity, we had a great turn-out, beyond all expectations, and, although everyone couldn’t make it through to the end (the winners emerged at 10 pm!), fabulous support from everyone there!
In a hotly contested final, with fierce back-and-forth between the Library Word-Nerds and the Hunny Bunch in an equivalent of double over-time and then a shoot-out – twice – the winners and champions of the Great Grey-Bruce Grown-up Spelling Bee are the Hunny Bunch, edging out the Word-Nerds by 1 word (you had to be there)! The remaining crowd went wild!!
Winning Team – Hunny Bunch
Best Costume – AHC Magic Charms
Best Name – Bees Aloud
Most Room for Improvement – the Bee-leavers
Total of team registrations, votes for costume and name, sponsorships, pledges and just general good-hearted spelling-bee related donations, we have collected, to date, $3,400 and counting – a really exciting result for us!
A tip of the hat to Crabby Joe’s, managers and staff, who were ultra-flexible in the face of a fledgling event and who have also pledged $2/meal from that night.
A warm thank-you to sponsors John & Susan Lindsay, George Hahn, Bill Brown Financial Services, Auditory Health Care, MOSAIC and Craig, McDonald, Reddon Insurance Brokers for their generous support of the Spelling Beekeepers, the Dewey Decimals, the Bashful Bluewater Bookworms, and the Hunny Bunch.
Thanks to our timekeeper Elizabeth, our host (who got shoved out – sorry about that, Bob!), our tally-keeper and money-tracker Natalie, and our judges Kim and Sonya from West Grey Public Library, as well as Larissa, Malcolm, Tessie and Jaimie, junior staff members who served as spotters, sellers and runners for the evening!
And thanks to our board members who consistently pitch in and help make everything Youth Literacy does a success: Susan Lindsay, Elizabeth Hahn, Harvey McFadden, Mandy Rhody Zuk, Ed Hotchkiss, Brian Robin, Natalie McCabe and Cheryl Lindsay. Please remember we are always looking for volunteer board members and tutors, and welcome new learners throughout the year.
And a huge thank-you to all members of all teams, who came out, dressed up and gave their all over a lengthy bee. I am so grateful for your generosity, your spirit, your willingness to go big before you went home – you made it a memorable evening for us all!
Once again, thanks for a great night!
